Dog Dies Saving 8-Month-Old Baby in Baltimore House Fire

Erika Poremski lost almost everything in a fire that tore through her Baltimore home on Sunday, but not the most important thing: her 8-month-old daughter Viv.untitled

The baby is alive thanks to a little hero named Polo, the family’s dog who laid on top of the child, apparently protecting her from the flames before rescuers arrived.

According to WBAL-TV, a Baltimore City Fire Department spokesman said when crews arrived at the two-story row home it was already engulfed in heavy fire and smoke. When they were told a child was trapped on the second floor, they entered and found Poremski’s dog, Polo, in the room covering the infant with his own body.

“She only had burns on her side because of it,” Poremski told WBAL-TV. “He stayed with her the whole time in the bedroom and wouldn’t even come downstairs to get out the door.” They were able to revive Viviana, who suffered severe burns, but Polo wasn’t so lucky (the cause of the fire is still under investigation, the report said).

“He was my first baby and now I lost him,” Poremski said, in tears. “And I’m just praying I don’t lose her. She’s all I have and it just happened so fast, I just don’t understand it. I just don’t know why this stuff happens.”

A Gofundme page, which says Polo “died a hero,” has raised over $16,000 to help mother and daughter get back on their feet. “Erika has been released from the hospital and Viv is in ICU at the children’s hospital,” it reads. “There is a lot of unknown concerning Viv. She is burned on 19 percent of her body and is not awake as they are doing a lot of testing.” Poremski, who suffered burns on her face and hands from trying to enter the home, tells WBAL-TV her daughter is a fighter. “She’s doing the best she can right now,” she added, “and she’s fighting and that’s it. She’s a really good girl I just hope she’s OK.”
